PLOT POINT #1 or #2: THE INCITING INCIDENT
The Inciting Incident is where your story wakes up.
It’s the moment that disrupts the hero’s normal world and sets everything in motion.
WHEN IT HAPPENS
Most of the time, it lands within the first 10 pages of your screenplay.
First, we see the hero’s everyday life. Then something happens that changes it.
On rare occasions, the Inciting Incident can occur before the movie begins, but that’s the exception, not the rule.
WHAT IT DOES
The Inciting Incident introduces the problem.
It creates an imbalance.
Something is new, wrong, missing, or threatened. The key is the story has been disturbed, and it won’t settle back down, ultimately forcing the hero to do something about it.
THE HERO’S RESPONSE
At this stage, the hero usually does not jump into action.
They react.
They hesitate.
They resist.
Something is new, wrong, missing, or threatened. The key is that the story has been disturbed, and it won’t settle back down, ultimately forcing the hero to do something about it.
One thing is certain. Normal is gone
THE CONNECTION TO THE FIRST ACT BREAK
The Inciting Incident lights the fuse.
The First Act Break (Plot Point #6) is the explosion.
That’s when the hero finally commits to the journey sparked by this moment.
PLACEMENT IN YOUR STRUCTURE
Within the 24-plot-point model, the Inciting Incident is typically:
Plot Point #2
But it’s flexible.
It can appear as:
Plot Point #1
Plot Point #2
Plot Point #3
What matters isn’t the exact slot…
It’s the impact.
THE AUDIENCE EXPERIENCE
This is where the audience starts leaning forward.
They may not fully understand the story yet…
But they know something has changed.
And they want to see what happens next.
WHY IT MATTERS
Without a strong Inciting Incident, your story never truly begins.
With it, everything that follows has purpose.
THE TAKEAWAY
The Inciting Incident is not the journey.
It’s the spark.
The disruption.
The moment that tells your hero:
Your life is about to change.
